ST. LOUIS — The week started out full of promise when the Cardinals rolled into Milwaukee, tied for first place in the NL Central. But over the course of the week, they faced their toughest division opponent for four games, the Brewers, before taking on their longtime rivals, the Cubs. St. Louis had been playing consistently solid ball in June, although there was room for improvement, like bridging together the relief innings. But a disappointing week during which the Cardinals went 3-4 set them back.
